Conference: June 28 – July 1, 2009
Exhibition: June 28-29, 2009
The Call for Abstracts for Nutrient Removal 2009 closed on November 19, 2008. We are no longer accepting abstract submittals.
Nutrient Removal 2009 will cover the latest experiences in research, design, and operation of nutrient removal systems at municipal and industrial wastewater treatment plants through interactive workshops, technical sessions, an exhibition, and facility tours. Water quality degradation continues as a result of stressors, including excess nutrients. While some researchers and operators focus on state-of-the-art approaches, others are grappling with new equipment and operational procedures associated with basic biological nutrient removal. These changes are being evaluated and implemented in an environment of higher energy costs and a need to have more sustainable operations. This conference will bring together perspectives from around the world to discuss and debate the current state of nutrient removal approaches.
The objectives of this conference are to foster discussion and debate on nutrient removal; examine research, design, and operational issues related to nutrient removal; provide a forum for the discussion of policy and management approaches to nutrient control.
The topics covered at this year’s Nutrient Removal Conference include:
- Research issues including: Practical limits of technology/ boundary conditions; biological nitrogen and phosphorus removal developments; chemical addition; phosphorus recovery; and process inhibition
- Operational issues including: Start-up; operational issues associated with compliance; analytical procedures; and process control and optimization
- Design issues including: Process modeling; pilot testing; sustainable practices; various flow sheets; sidestream treatment; and cost/benefit considerations
Professionals who may benefit the most from this conference include:
- Researchers
- Regulators
- Designers
- Manufacturers and Their Representatives
- Municipal Agencies, including Operators and Managers
- Industrial Dischargers
- And others seeking to understand the full picture of the latest developments and practical experiences on this important topic
Abstract Review Criteria
ORIGINALITY - The paper should deal with new concepts or novel applications of established concepts. It may describe substantial improvements of existing theories or present new data in support and extension of these theories. Comparative or supportive data should be included.
STATUS OF THE CONCEPT - The abstract should establish that the concept is well-developed and should present data or results to support the hypothesis. Data should have been subjected to preliminary analysis, at a minimum. Preference will be given to abstracts showing concrete results with practical applications.
TECHNICAL CONTENT - Objectives and scope of the concept should be stated. The conditions under which the data were obtained and general procedures/methodology used should be presented. Conclusions should be drawn directly from the investigation.
BENEFITS AND SIGNIFICANCE - Actual benefits and widespread applications should be reported. Has the project helped clean water or reduce pollutants and discharges? Does the method described save time and money? Is it more accurate? Is it more effective? Is this an unusual case or typical of general applications?"
QUALITY - The adequacy of an abstract is considered indicative of the quality of the final paper or poster and of the presentation at the conference. Authors should prepare their abstracts with care, paying attention to style, organization of the abstract, and accuracy of the data presented. In addition, during all WEF conferences individual presentations, including visual aids, are monitored. The quality of prior presentations is considered in judging current submissions.
