Mechanical Engineer

Mechanical engineers design systems for plumbing, pipes, air conditioning and heating, and heavy machinery. They are essential professionals in every industry. Some of their responsibilities in the water industry include:

  • designing the piping and flow routes through water treatment plants and water distribution systems;
  • making water treatment plants and water distribution systems operate efficiently and reliably;
  • planning and designing tools, engines, and machines to perform specialized functions such as delivering a steady flow of chemicals at a certain rate into the water supply at a treatment plant;
  • overseeing the installation, operation, and maintenance of equipment.
Education: Four- or five-year degree or graduate degree in mechanical engineering
Certificates, licenses: Licensed Professional Engineer (P.E.)
Desirable traits and skills: Strong in science and math; analytical; mechanical; good writing and communication skills; independently motivated
