Governance, with regard to associations, is the participation of volunteers in making decisions that are crucial to the operation and viability of an organization. Each association must work to achieve a balance between members' broad participation and involvement and the ability to make timely decisions. Elected or appointed leaders set direction and establish policies, with input from and advice of staff.
